Jobs that allow you to work remotely

Why would I want to work remotely (COVID-19 made me do it)

Okay so you may be reading this post because the chance of being able to work remotely has always been a goal of yours, but your not sure where to get started.

Or you might simply now be forced to work remotely due to the current pandemic.  Either way, working remotely is now at the forefront of a lot of peoples minds.

Some people may not even like to work remotely while others are absolutely loving it!  Me personally, I’ve always been an avid fan of being able to work remotely.

It’s actually been a goal of mine to be able to work permanently from my laptop (more on that in another post).

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I will go through 10 jobs that you can start doing right now that will allow you to not only work remotely, but also potentially earn you a good living!

These are uncertain times so why not give one of these jobs a go and who knows, it might turn into a full time career down the line.

What are the options?

The ability to work remotely hasn’t been around that long, due to the fact the internet is only about 30 years old.  Within the last 15 years or so people have really started to take remote working seriously.

A new age of ‘Digital Nomads’ has started to emerge with around 4.8 million Americans already claiming to be Digital nomads.

I wrote a blog post on this a while back, click here to learn more.

A digital nomad is someone who works from their laptop and travels the world whilst doing so. Sounds like a lifestyle you might enjoy?  Then lets see what options you could choose from to get you started!

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is where you get paid for promoting other peoples products and services.  You will share a unique link online somewhere, and when someone makes a purchase using that link you will receive a commission.

The beauty of affiliate marketing is you don’t have to come up with the product or service yourself.

So essentially, all the hard work is done for you, all you need to do is promote the product/service and receive a commission.

Commission can be up to 40% on certain items, and the great news is that nearly every single company will have an affiliate programme, so the opportunities are endless.

I have a few affiliate links on my website, although I’m not currently making any money from them at the moment.

As my website traffic starts to increase over time more and more people will click my links and I’ll start to make passive income on them.

Affiliate marketing can be very inconsistent, with some people earning anywhere from £10,000 per year up to £1,000,000.

You could literally get started today earning money through affiliate marketing.  Sign up to amazons affiliate programme (Amazon Associates).  Then do a solid review on a product you really like and is available on amazon.

Why not do a video or write a detailed post for your product review, then share your content and product affiliate link on your social channels.

Once people see your amazing review and click the link, anything they buy on Amazon you will get a commission on!  Its that simple.

So now you have no excuse, you’ve got the ultimate blueprint to start a multi-million pound business……. sort of.

Graphic Designer

Graphic design is an evergreen skill, meaning that its a skill that will always be needed.

Content is so important these days and having amazing Graphics and pictures is key to having great content.  Instagram is a perfect example.

The platform is mainly based around pictures of a high quality, so a good graphic designers could potentially do very well.

Create a business page on instagram and start publishing content on the platform using relevant hashtags.

While doing this I would also be doing cold outreach to potential clients who might benefit from your services.  Almost all businesses need graphic designers and if your work is good then there is no reason you can’t get your work noticed.

Get creative, learn sales, learn how to market your work effectively, there’s no better time than now with all this free time that we have.

Teaching English

Yes, you can get paid money for teaching people how to speak your native tongue, crazy right?

This is something I thought about doing a few years ago but never got around to doing (like a lot of other money making schemes).

English is probably the most commonly spoken language in the world and people are always wanting to either learn or brush up on their English.  So you know there is plenty of potential students out there, but where do you find them?

Don’t worry I’ve got you covered.  These should get you started

italki

Hello Talk

Preply

English First

These should be a good starting point, but to be honest there are loads of different options out there.  Just be open minded and be patient.  The market may seem competitive but if your keen and stay at it you could be on your way to helping someone achieve their goal of speaking another language.

Blogging

Okay who better to give you advice on blogging other than the best blogger there is, me!

I hope you sensed the sarcasm on the last paragraph (if not, ah well!)

Blogging is a job that allows you to work remotely, but its more of a long term income.  Meaning that I wouldn’t expect you to start a blog in the hopes that it was going to start making you money in a short period of time.

I’m not saying its impossible to start making money off your blog straight away, but more often than not its going to take some hard graft and a lot of hours to see any sort of financial gain from a blog.

I have still put it down on the list though because there are mega successful blogs out there!  Some people make crazy money on their blogs through affiliate links and sponsorship deals.

My advice would be to run a blog alongside another income stream and build it with the intent of it becoming successful long term.  If you think its something you may enjoy of course.

Forex trading

Forex is something i don’t have a lot of experience with so I’ll make it a quick one.

Forex trading is where you buy and sell currencies on the foreign exchange stock market.  People make money on this because the currencies change value on a daily basis, so one currency could be worth less one day but more the next day.  This way when your buying and selling on the market you can make a profit.

The reason I put this on the list is because you can work remotely while doing it and you can also make a lot of money, if you know what your doing.

If your interested in finance and stock markets then this could be an interesting career for you to explore.  Here’s a few training courses below to get you started:

Consulting

Consulting covers a wide range of options, which is hugely beneficial.

When you think of a consultant whats the first thing that pops into your head? A doctor? A business person? Someone who has 4 university degrees and a PHD?

This could very well be the case.

Really though, a consultant can be someone who offers help and advice on basically anything.  I know how to run Facebook and Instagram ads and have helped companies to set up campaigns.  This is a very specific skill, but this can be translated over to numerous fields.

Good at betting?  Offer some betting advice to people.  Maybe you can take a 15% cut of the winnings.  Get creative there’s no boundaries.

If you like fashion then set up an Instagram page where you offer fashion tips and tell people you will shop for them for a service charge (A fashion consultant).  This is a popular one already, which is a good indication, as it tells you it is a profitable niche already!

Better still, if your in the middle of learning a new skill then learn it to a decent standard and give some consulting advice on it.  Don’t think this is being fake or an impostor.  You only need to know 10% more than whoever your giving the advice to.  As long as you have the knowledge and are giving sound advice, then your well within your right to charge someone.

I could go on for days, giving advice on different niches but you get the idea.

Any other advice on consulting then your best bet would probably be Sam Ovens.  He’s one of the top consultants in the world and is a complete wizard when it comes to setting up your consulting business.

Also check out this article I read on starting a consulting business.  Some very good practical advice to get you started.

Writer

Writing is a service based business which has an array of advantages.  The major one being that it requires zero start up fees.

You literally have to find paying clients and that’s it, which can take time but costs no money.

I understand that writing isn’t something that a lot of people may necessary like doing, but it is a skill you already have, and have developed over many years.  Besides, do you love the current job your doing at the moment?  Maybe you do, but if your like most people then you probably don’t (apologies for the reality check).

Writing as a job can come under so many different sub-categories such as copy-writing, article writer or blog post writer.  I myself have done writing jobs in the past and found them to be an easy enough way to make a bit of side income.

You may want something more long term but this is something that will take time.

Sign up to some freelance websites like People Per Hour and Upwork.  Here you can search for writing jobs as well as a wide range of other jobs (especially jobs I mention in this post).

Web developer

Web developing is a great industry to get started in, even though it’s been around ever since the internet started.  A web developer builds websites and applications, which can be used for the internet.

‘But isn’t the market saturated and I won’t be able to get any work?’  This article from Cocoon seems to think so, but not impossible to make a career out of it.

The way I see it, even if the market is saturated that shouldn’t put you off wanting to get started, given it’s something you really want to pursue.

If someone went to university to study web development you wouldn’t say ‘There are too many web developers out there, you won’t get a job’ same goes with a degree in engineering or anything else.

You don’t need to have a 30 grand piece of paper to have a career in web development.  It can help massively I must admit but if you are persistent and willing to put in the work then that won’t stop you.

Don’t believe me?

Check out Chris’s channel.  I have been following Chris for years, I love how he is a self taught web developer who has also become a top teacher on Skillshare.  Chris was able to do all this without any prior experience in web developing.

Social Media marketer/manager

You may not be aware of what a social media manager of marketer even is so I’ll explain.

A social media marketer is someone who runs paid advertising campaigns on social media to help clients generate more revenue or get more clients.  Campaigns can also be organic, meaning the client isn’t paying for advertising bills.

Social media managers are paid to run and manage the day-to-day operation of a clients social media channel.  Anything from responding to comments to posting on a regular basis making sure content is getting distributed properly

You may have heard me talk about social media marketing in previous posts.  The reason for this is because I myself am a social media marketer and I know the industry fairly well.

Obviously I am going to be bias towards this particular job, but in reality it actually is a great industry to get involved in.

Most companies don’t know how to use social media properly and nearly every company can utilise the power of social media, therefore the opportunity for your services is practically endless.

Again this is a service based business so all you need is paying clients and you’re on your way to a nice side income (or full time).

When I was first starting out I used YouTube as well as various Google searches to get a good understanding of the skills needed to get going.

See below my top resources:

All the information is out there for free, but if you can afford to I would suggest investing in a decent course which will cut out most of the fluff and reduce your learning time significantly.

Investing

Lastly we have investing!

This one is similar to blogging in the sense that it is more of a long term income source and may not even be considered a job, but I’m putting it in anyway as I feel it can always be added as an extra income source.

When I talk about investing I am talking about stocks and stock markets but I don’t want you to imagine a Wolf of Wall street type of investing.

Index funds like the S&P 500 invests your money into a broad portfolio of businesses (worlds top 500) which classes it as a low risk investment with great potential returns long term.

I’m not going to pretend I know everything about investing, because I don’t.  It’s something I am currently looking into and I have done some research to get started.  See resources below:

Tony Robbins- Unshakeable

Johnny FD- Investing 101

Stefan James- Investing

These 3 sources are a good starting point but there are thousands of free resources you can use.

I would highly recommend the Tony Robbins- Unshakeable though as I have read the book myself and the information and detail absolutely blew me away.

Tony leaves no stone unturned when it comes to investing and he himself learns from the best of the best.

Now you have no excuse

So there you go.

10 jobs you can do while working remotely.

Thanks for sticking around to the end I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read this.
