Learning how to create better content is an ongoing thing and you never really stop learning how to do so. The main thing for any content creator is to just start.
There have been many people out there who wish to be content creators but never even attempt to publish anything. They are too fixated on creating something that needs to be perfect, and needs put out to the world at the right time.
Here’s the secret.
It NEVER will be perfect, and there is certainly no ‘right’ time to put it out there.
The right time is now.
You need to go through the trials and tribulations of the creative process but with an open mind. Let go of this concept of perfection and just be happy in the fact that you actually put something out there for people to see.
Now I would like to talk about a few tips on how you may create better content yourselves. I am by no means an expert in the topic I’m just simply sharing what I have found to be helpful to me over the past few years.
Take risks
If you want to create better content then I believe there is no other option than to do things that may be a bit out of your comfort zone.
I see online content creators constantly innovating and breaking the mould and it actually makes me wonder why I’m not upping my game also. That’s something we can all learn from. These guys are trying new ways of doing things and its paying off.
I believe the popularity of video content is a great example of this.
Not that long ago someone decided to pick up a camera and start talking into it. They would record their day and post it online which gave people and insight into their lives and personality.
I can imagine the reaction on some peoples faces when they seen someone walking down the street with a camera pointed at their face.
Fast forward to today and there is now a countless amount ‘vloggers’ out there doing the exact same thing.
Talk about a risk paying off!
Take a look at this video that Gary Vee took of himself 15 years ago. Gary knew that video content was going to be a huge hit and he decided to start recording episodes of himself talking about wine. He’s now a global brand and owns his own multi-million dollar media empire, as well as being a keynote speaker at huge multi-national events.
Imagine he never decided to take that risk of sitting down in front of a camera?
Be consistent
The only way to really improve massively as a content creator is to consistently do it. Its that simple really.
You’re not always going to create ground breaking content, which is totally normal. But if you can create content over an extended period of time then I guarantee you will see a massive improvement.
A great way to look at it is understanding the term ‘compound interest’. Now don’t worry I’m not going to bore you with a lesson in finances, not that I could even if I wanted to.
Compound interest is a term that is used when explaining how a small but consistent investment can snowball over time and manage to turn into a rather large investment, this is due to the interest compounding over time. If you still don’t get it then just read this article which can explain it better then I ever could.
The reason this term is useful to look at when we talk about creating better content is because if you start getting into the habit of creating consistent content now, then in 3 years time your effort will compound, just like the interest and your quality of work will sky rocket.
Learn new skills
Learning new skills will separate you from the competition and make your work stand out. Especially if the skill you have mastered is in high demand.
A word of advice though.
Don’t try and learn everything to a master level.
My advice would be to dip your toe in many different areas and then choose 1 or 2 where you will go deep with. It’s important to niche down when thinking of the long term but don’t get bogged down by this either. There are many people out there who have done well by not honing in on a specific skill.
Check out a blog post I done a few months ago on how you can use self-education to better yourself. I listed a plethora of learning platforms which help with leaning new skills.
Take inspiration from other creators
Who do you take inspiration from?
Who’s content can you not get enough of?
If you know the answer to these questions then please use these people as a benchmark to help you become a better creator. I do this all the time when I’m scrolling online. If I see any content I like then I’ll save it, screenshot it or make note of it at least. Anything to make sure I can look back on it and draw out some inspiration from it.
This last point is related to the first one where I mentioned about taking risks. All the top creators in your space will have taken risks, its part of getting better. Sometimes it pays off and other times it may not.
The important thing is that you take inspiration from this and aren’t intimidated by it.
